Mandatory Flu Vaccination for Healthcare Workers?
What’s On Your Mind?:

Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) thinks that flu vaccination should be mandatory for healthcare workers (unless medically contraindicated). See the position paper at http://www.apic.org/Resource_/TinyMceFileManager/Advocacy-PDFs/APIC_Infl...

CDC's voluntary recommendation that all healthcare workers be vaccinated have been relatively ineffective. Should healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, EMS workers, public health staff) be required to get the flu vaccine each year? Is this a case of restricting individual choice for the greater good, or an unwarranted invasion on these employees' rights?

Facemask requirement for healthcare staff

Here's a possible workaround that doesn't force vaccinations upon unwilling healthcare workers. In Pennsylvania, hospitals started requiring unvaccinated staff to wear facemasks at all times during the workday. Even though this mandate does not require workers to get the flu shot, participating hospitals reported a dramatic increase in vaccination rates -- staff didn't want to wear masks all the time, so they chose to get the flu shot instead.
